Empowering Independence –  Zeynep’s journey to securing her state pension

How Hopscotch’s expert support enabled a pensioner to overcome language barriers and gain financial stability

Situation

Zeynep, living alone and relying solely on disability benefits, found herself in need of assistance when it came to claiming her state pension upon reaching pension age. Despite her efforts, her limited proficiency in English posed a significant challenge in completing the necessary identity clearance with the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), leaving her feeling disappointed and hopeless.

Support Provided

Recognising Zeynep’s predicament, our Welfare Advisor stepped in to offer guidance and support. Leveraging his experience and expertise, he helped Zeynep understand the requirements for clearing the ID check and facilitated communication with the DWP, enlisting the assistance of an interpreter to navigate the process effectively. With this support, Zeynep successfully completed the security procedures and submitted her application for state pension.

 Impact

In a few weeks’ time, Zeynep received an award letter from the DWP, confirming her eligibility to receive £489.24 every 4 weeks as her state pension. Grateful for the assistance provided by Hopscotch, Zeynep expressed her heartfelt gratitude, acknowledging that she wouldn’t have been able to navigate the complex application process on her own. With her pension secured, Zeynep now has the financial means to afford necessities and even indulge in a long-awaited holiday, marking the beginning of a new chapter in her life filled with increased income and restored confidence.
