Compassionate support and adaptation – Nala’s journey towards comfort and wellbeing

Category Elderly Care and Mental Health

How Hopscotch Homecare’s responsive approach and dedicated care workers alleviated physical pain and enhanced her mental health and quality of life for an elderly woman facing health challenges

Situation

Nala, an 81-year-old woman of African origin, lives with her sister and brother-in-law in a council flat in Camden. Her sister, diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer, requires her husband’s full attention, leaving Nala with no other emotional connections. Initially, Nala was mobile and nearly independent, requiring only supervision from Care Workers.

Challenge

Over time, Nala’s physical condition deteriorated due to Osteoarthritis, leading to decreased mobility and increasing pain. This progression led to Nala forgetting to take her medications and struggling with daily tasks. The decline in her health necessitated adjustments in her care plan and increased support to ensure her wellbeing.

Support

  • Hopscotch Homecare provided continuous support through three permanent Care Workers who developed a strong and trustful connection with Nala. This bond enabled thorough monitoring of her health, facilitating prompt reporting of any changes.
  • When her memory and mobility declined, the care plan was updated to include medication administration and additional support for daily tasks such as meal preparation, personal care and mobility assistance.
  • Upon noticing further deterioration, including sharp pain preventing her from getting out of bed, a physiotherapist was engaged to work with Nala weekly.
  • Adjustments to her living environment, including the provision of a profile bed and a commode, were made to meet her evolving needs. Additionally, the frequency of daily visits was increased to ensure consistent support.

Impact

  1. The tailored support and equipment have made Nala’s daily routine easier and less painful.
  2. Nala feels calm and confident in the care provided by her Care Workers, and her sister is reassured by the thorough and empathetic approach of the Hopscotch team.
  3. The upcoming respite care ensures Nala will be fully supported while her sister is away, further enhancing her sense of security.
  4. Nala expressed her gratitude, stating, “I feel blessed with all the staff and the care workers who support me. I am sure I will not be able to manage alone.” Her sister echoed this sentiment, praising the empathy and efficiency of the Hopscotch team.
  5. The Care Workers’ dedication has fostered a positive and respectful relationship with Nala, contributing to her overall well-being and satisfaction.
  6. Through effective communication and collaboration with external agencies, Hopscotch Homecare has ensured that Nala’s needs are met promptly and comprehensively, providing her with the highest quality of care.
